Tips for Eating in Rome
1. A bar in Italy
What we know as a café, Italians call a bar. It is somewhere Italians go to for breakfast, which tends to be a coffee and a cornetto, lunch, which is usually a sandwich or a small selection of hot plates and apertitivo, which is an alcoholic drink with some snacks.
2. Drinking coffee as the counter
Italians tend to drink their coffee at the bar counter, rather than sat down at a table. The price for the coffee usually costs more if you do decide to sit down at a table.
When it comes to paying or your coffee, should you decide to drink at the bar, you will normally have to pay for it first and show your receipt to the barista.
Alternatively if you sit down, you will pay after you finish.
3. Tipping is not expected
Tipping in Italy is not expected, however tips are obviously always appreciated. Italians usually round up on their bill. I usually tip around 10%. Tips should be paid in cash.
4. The bread and cover charge
Restaurants can often an addition couple of euro to the bill for bread, which is bought to you table even if you don’t ask for it.
5. The bill is bought to you only when you ask for it
It may be quite common for waitors to bring the bill to the table, once they assume you are finished and wish to leave.
In Italy waitors tend to come to the table, if there is a rrasaon bought to their attention.
6. Choose gelaterias with natural colored gelato
Real gelato has a natural color, not bright a vibrant, which is a sign of artificial coloring. Pistaccio for example is a light earthy green color. Banana is a white, grey-ish color and mint should be white.
Also the gelato should not be displayed in huge mounds above the container. This is because gelato that is stacked above the rim, does so as it has a higher percentage of air, made with chemical stabilizers
